Ambi’s Little Things

भर

Ambi’s Little Things, written by Eleanor Sangma and illustrated by Phaoniu Shio, is an illustrated level-4 book (for children who can read fluently and with confidence). The story, based on a custom followed in Emangre village in Meghalaya's Garo Hills, was published by Sauramandala Foundation, Meghalaya. It is a part of The Forgotten Folklore Project (TFFP) which brings to life 65 stories from communities in Meghalaya and other northeastern states of India. The story books, developed in collaboration with local artists, aim to contribute to early childhood education and disseminate knowledge on local nature, culture, foods, garments, kitchens, and more.

The story follows Chimik, a young girl grieving the loss of her ambi (grandmother). After Ambi passes away following a long illness, the village gathers to bid farewell, building an altar and playing flutes and drums. Chimik is confused and wonders why people seem happy during such a sad time.

Ai (her mother) takes Chimik away from the crowd and introduces her to a grieving tradition through a wooden box containing ‘ambi’s little things’ – bangles, earrings and even her clipped nails. After Ai reveals the custom to her, Chimik imagines these items as a magical thread connecting her to her grandmother. She learns that it’s okay to be both sad and happy — mourning the loss of a loved one while celebrating the happy memories. This understanding brings Chimik comfort, allowing her to smile and cherish ambi’s presence in these keepsakes.

This 23-page book is available in English, Khasi, Pnar, Garo, Hindi – with more translations to come on Storyweaver by Pratham Books.
